Now that the chord progressions and vocal ideas are in place for the track, ill and Jared continue exploring vocal ideas and crafting the song's structure.
In his episode of the pureMix.net exclusive Start To Finish Series featuring ill Factor, Jared Evan, Jimmy Douglass, and Dave Kutch, ill Factor and Jared Evan begin to combine their ideas in real-time and map out the arrangement of "Light Shine Through."
See how ill Factor:
Incorporates the arrangement view of Ableton Live into their creative process to begin mapping out the skeleton of the song
Continues to add production ideas to the track while Jared works on vocal ideas and lyrics
Creates "Vocal Chops" to be used as a production element along the way
Adds textures to the track using Output's "Arcade" plugin
Sketches out the song structure up to the bridge for Jared to lay down vocal ideas
Records Jared's initial vocal ideas as they flow
Starts adding creative effects like vocoders and more, even though the vocals are in rough form, to help inspire Jared and get the vibe of the track
Exports the multitrack and two-track for Jared to take back to the hotel that night to continue to write to

00:00:23 We are right now
trying to figure out where we're gonna go,
the vibe is really good,
I'm loving the feel.
You're good?
Alright, so what I'm gonna do is,
remember, I've been working in
my Session View this whole time,
this is my canvas where
I'm just throwing these ideas down.
00:00:38 We've got a couple ideas
that are cool
but now I wanna see how they sound
like being connected to one another.
00:00:43 And this is where the Arrangement View
comes really helpful.
00:00:46 So, in order to send
all my tracks or
everything that's currently
being heard over to the Arrangement View,
I can simply hit the global
record button here on the top...
00:00:57 And any clips that are currently triggered
or ready to be launched
will be arranged
or sent over to the Arrangement View.
00:01:04 And now that we have an arrangement here
we could either leave that there,
go back to the Session View
and mix match different clips
or we could simply map
out our arrangement.
00:01:15 So here is the arrangement,
you won't hear anything
till the play-head
makes its way over to bar 17.
00:01:20 Now I chose randomly bar 17
for just any random number
but once I have it recorded here
we can simply just move the arrangement
and since these were looped clips
this is where it becomes
a really powerful here.
00:01:32 I can now drag the whole arrangement,
like this, to the right or to the left,
and say: 'Let's start the song off...'
Maybe let's just start off with
no drums
and just the piano riff for a bit.
00:01:45 And, I'm not using any of this 808.
00:01:48 So I'll take that out for right now.
00:01:49 And here is the 'Ruff Vox',
so we'll have that there.
00:01:54 So we'll just start off with the piano.
00:02:12 It's now easier for me to map
where I wanna head to
doing it this way.
So now, let's see,
I want the drums to maybe
come in halfway through.
00:02:20 So however we feel
the arrangement is gonna go,
I have it here now.
00:02:24 So, I wanna check the transition between
this initial idea here,
that we started off with
and this new chord progression idea
that we kind of just stumbled across.
00:02:43 At the end of the day
what really is gonna determine
whether this is a keeper or not
is if the link between these two worlds
make sense and if a great melody
can transition between each section.
00:02:56 So that to me is the uttermost importance.
00:02:58 If it's like: 'Wow, that's really cool!'
The problem is
we could get lost in adding a whole
bunch of different cool ideas
but what we wanna do is make
sure that we have a journey.
00:03:08 Melodically we're taking the listener
on a journey,
there's many peaks, many valleys.
00:03:13 You can do that with
just a simple 8 bar riff
or 8 bar loop
and that's the melody is king,
you have to continue paving
that way with the melody
or you can enter new different
you know, areas, with chord progressions
or different chord
progressions and things like that,
introducing a new change
could be helpful in doing that.
00:03:35 So, there's different ways about doing it.
00:03:37 Now I just wanna see what's
gonna make sense the most.
00:03:39 So, I'll go to that
idea that we did here with the rap.
00:03:45 Let's put this here.
00:03:47 Now, once I have an arrangement
or its clips on the Arrangement View,
I start to live here
and I start to map out my skeleton.
00:03:53 It really helps my workflow,
and moving along fast.
00:03:56 Well, Jared is working on ideas lyrically.
00:04:00 I can already start
mapping out this whole song.
00:04:03 Let's put this on, see where we're at.
00:04:10 Let me try the vibe
that I tracked over here.
00:04:15 -The thing you put down?
-Yeah, let me see if that makes sense.
00:04:44 -I would stay on the chords there.
-Stay, yeah, right?
That's what felt better too.
00:04:49 So, we'll keep this,
duplicate that.
And it's OK.
00:04:52 I still have all those
ideas in my Session View.
00:04:54 So, I don't lose anything.
00:05:12 What time is that in the record?
In the Arrangement it's like 1:20 but
things have to be trimmed.
00:05:20 Right, we have a Chorus.
00:05:21 I wanted to see if this flow connected...
00:05:23 It's better than the chords.
00:05:25 Yeah, this made more sense.
00:05:34 You should bring piano in there,
it's the same chords.
00:05:37 I'm thinking like, maybe some guitars.
00:05:40 Let me build a guitar track here.
00:05:43 This Kontakt...
00:05:45 I'm gonna use
Native Instrument's Electric Sunburst,
I love using this plug-in.
00:05:50 I'm gonna drag and drop
and I'm just too lazy to pick up
this guitar that I have over here.
00:05:56 Don't yell at me guitar.
00:05:58 But, yeah, I kind of like the tone.
00:06:05 Let's set that up there.
I'm gonna tweak this a little bit.
00:06:09 I'll probably use a little bit
of RC-20
to get this going.
00:06:21 So what I'm gonna do is make
sure that the voicing is set off
and let's tweak this
up a little bit more.
00:06:28 Let's set the 'Wobble' up,
a little less noise,
distortion and a lot of space.
00:06:37 And I'm gonna go to the playback
and let's go twice as fast.
00:06:45 Maybe 1:1.
00:06:47 And change some of the patterns here,
let's see what we've got.
00:07:08 Those are good things to have.
00:07:12 I'll take this up.
00:07:15 That's gonna be dope.
00:07:39 I like that.
00:08:06 That sounds cool there.
00:08:19 Delay...
00:08:21 Echo, here's the delay.
00:08:56 Should we go faster,
should we speed it up?
I can't tell...
00:09:00 We're at 83 now,
I'll bump it at 85.
00:09:06 That's just one up?
That's from 83 to 85.
00:09:10 Try just 84
because it didn't need that much.
00:09:14 You're so wise.
00:09:25 And what I wanna do is
add some side-chain to the guitar.
00:09:31 And I'm gonna have
it side-chained to...
00:09:35 Actually, let me use 'Kickstart'.
00:09:38 And, I was about to side-chain
the guitar with the kick
but in this case I might wanna use
the side-chain.
00:09:46 I'm using the 'Kickstart'
plug-in to do more of like a gate
type of thing here.
00:10:00 So, there you go.
00:10:01 And let's add just a little bit more grit.
00:10:04 I like grit.
00:10:06 Happy times.
00:10:08 I love some good old grit.
00:10:09 Happy little distortion,
let's put some distortion there.
00:10:39 So, we're up to figure out
where we're going melodically.
00:10:42 And then I can kind of fill in all the
gaps here with all this other stuff.
00:10:46 Cool. Are you vibing with this so far?
Yeah.
00:10:51 Once we get it it's gonna be...
00:10:52 -It's gonna be smashes.
-We just gotta get the puzzle.
00:10:55 Alright,
so let's go through a couple raps here...
00:11:02 I like starting off like this.
00:11:04 It's actually kind of cool.
00:11:10 And then bringing in the bass part here.
00:11:15 So we can go...
00:11:23 Dope.
00:11:30 So right now what I wanna do,
what's going on in my head is,
I wanna do some vocal chops
and incorporate that as like some nice
things to throw in and there.
00:11:41 Sometimes when I do this
I stumble across something
that can actually be
an element that would maybe even stand for
a Chorus or something
and becomes an iconic
staple in the song itself.
00:11:52 So, kind of like just stumbling
across a happy accident.
00:11:55 And that normally happens when I'm doing
vocal chops and things like that.
00:11:58 So, to do this
we have our rough vocal takes here.
00:12:02 I remind you these are
just the rough vocals
but they're good enough to use.
00:12:07 So, I'll solo this one here.
00:12:12 We've got some singing to it
so there's some tonal stuff going on there.
00:12:15 I'm gonna create a MIDI
track right underneath this.
00:12:18 And I'm simply going to
click that vocal track
and I'm gonna click and drag down
to the MIDI track.
00:12:25 What that's gonna do is it's gonna
place that vocal track as
you see here in a 'Simpler'.
00:12:29 Now I can just trigger it
with my MIDI controller.
00:12:33 And it's gonna act like a normal sampler
so if I go left of C major...
00:12:39 It's just gonna pitch it down.
00:12:42 Above C major, it will pitch it up. So on.
00:12:45 But this 'Simpler' has a really cool slice mode
so the minute I hit that
it's going to detect the transients
and then begin to create slices
that I can trigger
with my MIDI controller, or my Push.
00:13:01 So if I wanna bring down the sensitivity
that will give me
less slices but yet it gives me more room
between each slice
so I get more of the actual phrase.
00:13:12 It's kind of cool.
00:13:14 And then what I do is
make sure I hit the 'Warp' mode
and set it to 'Complex Pro'
so that when I do pitch it up
it's not going to
sound like a chipmunk but will
keep the formant so that's trying to
keep the best integrity as possible.
00:13:32 As opposed to switching to...
00:13:36 So I wanna do that.
We'll leave it in 'Complex'.
00:13:38 And now, let's go and add 'Time & Space',
let's do a little bit of delay.
00:13:46 This has a filter on there,
I'll set it to a quarter note.
00:13:52 Maybe an 8th note.
00:13:56 Alright. And then, let's put a reverb,
I'm gonna use a stock reverb here.
00:14:03 I loop the section and just
kind of see what I come across.
00:14:18 Let me just raise this
up a little bit in volume.
00:14:27 And then I'll hit this,
since I wasn't recording
but it did keep what I did.
00:14:32 So this is always
monitoring your performance,
so it keeps it in the back-end,
which is really helpful.
00:14:41 I kind of like that...
00:14:48 I wanna move that over here.
00:14:57 And then let's filter this out.
00:15:00 So, going back to
the EQs and filters,
I'm gonna put an Auto-Filter
right after the delay.
00:15:07 Filter this out like this.
00:15:08 And
inside the actual sampler
I'm gonna choose the OSR filter drive.
00:15:19 And make that decay time
a lot longer.
00:15:22 And let's bring it down
and see what we've got.
00:15:30 -Crazy.
-And repeat that.
00:15:32 Let's see what it sounds
like with everybody
at least in this section here.
00:15:37 I'll put it over here
with the guitar and stuff.
00:15:48 This could be a cool element to introduce
halfway through
transition from Verse to Pre.
00:15:54 As a new element as we start to build
the arrangement.
00:16:13 That's cool, I like that.
I'll call this
'Vocal Chop'.
00:16:18 Arrangement.
00:16:19 Let's start working on like...
00:16:21 I think we should open with that piano.
00:16:24 Just like a...
00:16:27 Alright, let's tweak the
arrangement and then see like,
what's gonna flow best.
00:16:31 I'll keep this vocal in here.
00:16:35 So let's see if this makes sense.
00:16:36 We have two bars of the piano.
00:16:42 Then that synth comes in.
00:16:47 We should bring that vocal thing in there.
00:16:56 And then we can go...
00:16:58 It should be just that
straight chord there.
00:17:00 Yeah, like that C chord thing.
00:17:04 Just right here.
00:17:06 So, taking from there.
00:17:22 -I might wanna change that note.
-Right, just different.
00:17:44 OK, so then, Verse 1 will start here.
00:17:46 So this is where I start to kind of
map things out.
00:17:49 Say... '1st Verse'.
00:17:52 That feels good, like,
bringing the first verse there.
00:17:57 Yeah, what,
to just start the Verse with that?
Yeah.
00:18:06 Keep the synth in though.
00:18:08 So, now I have
the whole arrangement here.
This is the...
00:18:14 beginning.
I'll map this out.
00:18:17 Right here.
00:18:38 And this would your Pre?
Yeah, that's 8 bars there that we have.
00:18:44 So I'm gonna hit Shit + Cmd + D,
duplicate that time there.
00:18:48 And then like,
what I like to do is start maybe
deleting some of the
drums halfway through.
00:19:01 And then bring these guys in like this.
00:19:05 Right here, add some more flavor.
00:19:08 I'll start marking these sections here,
so this would be like...
'Pre'.
00:19:37 So then, right there.
That's where we're at, 'Chorus'
kind of vibe.
00:19:45 -'Chorus', right?
-Yeah, right there.
00:19:48 I think it's cool to kind of just
see what we can rock
and then I think, naturally, we'll kind of
walk right into what's gonna
feel good for the Chorus.
00:19:57 Yeah.
00:19:58 So, here's the 'Pre' that we had
that we both kind of feel like
this is a dope Pre.
00:20:04 Let me grab the beginning of it.
00:20:06 Go from this, drag it right here.
00:20:34 You don't have to change...
00:20:36 Maybe change the Chorus
but I think you'd just
make it bigger there.
00:20:40 -Like, bigger like...
-Like a piano...
00:20:42 Emphasize the chords.
00:20:44 Alright, so I'm gonna...
00:21:00 -So, like different chords...
-It doesn't have to...
00:21:13 So, if we're going from...
00:21:23 That could like a good
'Bridge' that we go to.
00:21:40 So it can kind of build up.
00:21:53 I think it sounds too much like a Bridge.
00:21:56 You should just keep
the chords how they are.
00:21:58 Do the same chords but with the piano.
00:22:02 There we go.
00:22:04 So, let's do this
and then put that
guitar that we did earlier.
00:22:07 Yeah, just make it...
00:22:31 -Dope.
-Right, cool.
00:22:34 Just kind of have the piano
play the line with the bass.
00:22:37 Exactly.
00:22:37 Alright, I'll move the bass over
so we know where it goes.
00:22:41 And let's record the piano.
00:23:12 Cool, I like the second half, right?
That's dope.
00:23:30 This was like
this part here and let me just
re-record the section.
00:23:50 One more time.
00:24:24 Alright, we've got the piano there,
the guitar.
00:24:28 I'm gonna go use Arcade,
maybe there's some stuff
here I can throw in.
00:24:33 We know we're in C major.
00:24:36 Sure, why not?
Ebb and Flow
and let's go to A minor,
same thing as C major.
00:24:50 Weird sounding, let's try some
of these things.
00:24:52 Arcade is an amazing plug-in,
it's created by a company called Output
and essentially what it is
is a plug-in that's receiving just
new loops, new samples
on an up-to-date basis,
so they're always
filling this up with new
samples and loops.
00:25:07 The cool thing is you can assign
the key signature that you're in
and it's already locked in to the tempo.
00:25:12 And so, times like these I like maybe
adding some
textures in there
that I would normally go to
riff wise with things like that.
00:25:29 Let's see what this sounds like.
00:26:22 I want maybe some
atmospheric stuff to kind of like
fill it up a little bit.
00:26:27 What you're thinking Jared?
Everything is crazy...
00:26:31 I'm just trying to think of
like a Hook part.
00:26:34 What about some strings?
Stringy strings.
00:26:38 I always love some strings.
00:27:20 That's kind of cool.
I'll leave that there.
00:27:23 Let's draw in.
00:27:26 OK. And then...
00:27:30 These two notes there.
00:27:32 And hit 'Legato' right here.
00:27:38 Let's give ourselves
two bars.
00:27:45 And there we have it.
00:27:49 So, instead of having it loop
over and over for those two bars
I'm just gonna consolidate this MIDI track
and make sure that I have
these two notes
extend for the full eight bars,
or four bars or eight bars.
00:28:07 And there's a little oboe
thing happening there, I don't know.
00:28:11 How lovely is some oboe.
00:28:14 This guy here.
So, I like the string.
00:28:39 And then we're back to a Verse vibe,
after that.
00:28:43 -You know what I'm saying?
-I know what you're saying.
00:29:00 -Let me put a verse idea there.
-Yeah, go for it.
00:29:03 Because it should be more like...
00:29:05 It shouldn't just go
right into choppiness.
00:29:07 Yeah.
00:29:08 So, let's create another...
00:29:11 -Are you ready?
-Yeah.
00:29:13 Do you have a little bit...
Yeah.
00:29:49 Cool.
00:29:55 Is the Auto-Tune on there?
Do you want to put some tune?
Just for reference purposes.
00:30:02 -So you feel good about your life.
-Exactly.
00:30:04 Make sure you make the artist feel
good about their life.
00:30:07 That's number one goal.
00:30:39 Personally they're pretty solid
-and it's kind of winning over...
-You love the pre?
Yeah, and this kind of like,
they're quite similar.
00:30:47 The thing is this is dope.
00:30:50 So, this is gonna be either or like...
00:30:52 -Between the two?
-And the Pre can kind of move up.
00:31:03 Something that just
moves a little bit more.
00:31:05 So like, the Verse is kind of dragged out
and I definitely wanna
pick it out like a Pre
that's a lot more our pace.
00:31:13 -Does that make sense?
-Yeah.
00:31:28 Do you wanna hear the other
ones before?
Yeah, there's one from earlier.
00:31:34 I think it actually could
come in the second verse.
00:31:36 Yeah, that second verse
could come in like that.
00:31:41 So maybe starting off like.
00:31:53 -It has that little bounce.
-Yeah, let me put that down.
00:31:56 Yeah, there you go.
00:32:02 My bad, my bad.
00:32:04 I'm not following my own rules.
00:32:32 That flows a lot better.
00:32:35 Because the tone is lower it hops up
like an octave.
00:32:40 Do you like it that low?
You can do the octave on that like...
00:32:54 -You wanna try...
-I'll do one more pass slightly different.
00:32:59 I'm gonna assign this to my number pad 3
because I'm still stuck
in my Pro Tools ways.
00:33:05 Alright, here we go.
00:33:23 One more time.
00:33:38 -One more time.
-Here we go.
00:33:50 That should be third.
Do one more time. I got it.
00:34:19 The end of that goes into the next one.
00:34:21 Yeah, let me just
peep it, let me check it out real quick.
00:34:50 Now that Pre feels good,
you know what I mean?
Dude, you do like some
slow rain stuff on there.
00:35:02 -Yes, sir.
-Some Bon Iver.
00:35:05 Let me bring up...
00:35:10 Once we have this we'll know what to do.
00:35:14 It's just like...
You need the hook to like...
00:35:17 Kill all of that.
00:35:22 This feels natural with the Verse.
00:35:53 Some strings there and then
I put the vocal synth on your voice.
00:35:59 We'll put it to MIDI mode
and create a MIDI track.
00:36:03 Alright. Let me route the MIDI
out of this track into 'Ruff Vox'
and choose Vocal Synth.
00:36:13 And now I can control.
00:36:17 Select this right here,
solo these two.
00:36:27 And let's mix these two together.
00:36:32 And turn this on.
00:36:35 Dope.
00:36:41 Like this.
00:36:46 I'm gonna duplicate this track.
00:36:49 Keep this one normal.
00:36:51 Take the Vocal Synth off
and then go to this MIDI track.
00:36:56 And I'm gonna tell
this MIDI track to trigger
and I'm moving quicker here
but let me rename
this so it's easier to find.
00:37:02 And so 'Vocod Vox'.
00:37:06 And now we're gonna go 'Output'
'Vocod Vox',
I don't need the
Waves Tune on the second one.
00:37:15 And now,
let's do that again.
00:37:19 'Vocod Vox',
'VocalSynth 2', so we should get...
00:37:40 That's crazy.
00:37:43 -Dope right?
-Yeah.
00:38:20 So maybe it can be something like...
00:38:34 Yeah, I don't know, it's such a...
00:38:36 it's kind of like we have
to walk into something that just
opens that up really nicely there.
00:38:41 And... I don't know,
maybe this Vocoder thing,
I'll just keep that bypassed for a second.
00:38:46 But let's see how it feels going in.
00:38:57 It's a dope verse.
00:39:43 Alright.
So, I think we're in a good place.
00:39:47 At this moment we've got
a rough skeleton,
we've got a Verse vibe,
Pre-Chorus vibe.
00:39:53 Still got the missing link, the Chorus,
you know, which is really important.
00:39:57 But, I think right now would be good
if I bounce this as a stereo track.
00:40:01 Yeah.
00:40:01 You kind of just vibe with it tonight.
00:40:03 If I sit with this I'll have it.
00:40:05 -This would be better.
-Would that be cool?
Yeah, just so I can
familiarize myself with this.
00:40:10 Yeah, I think like,
that way we kind of know
lyrically where you wanna go.
00:40:14 We have enough parts for
me to move things around.
00:40:16 You can send me the
stems or just the 2-track?
Yeah, I'll bounce a stereo
bounce for you to have
and then I'll give you the stems
so you have
your vocals,
you can use that as reference,
if you wanna move the
arrangement let me know.
00:40:30 And tomorrow it's fresh years,
fresh eyes...
00:40:36 If we come in fresh...
We have the sketch now.
00:40:38 Yeah, and sometimes that's what I need,
I need, sometimes,
to get out of a zone.
00:40:42 100%.
00:40:43 Especially when I've been
looping something for like 18 days,
so it feels like sometimes.
00:40:48 Let me go ahead and do that now.
00:40:50 So, let me start with the
stereo bounce in Ableton Live,
you just decide where the beginning
and the end of that bounce...
00:40:56 You can make a two track,
the bounce you do,
keep my vocal sketch in there
but then do a 2-track
that's just the beat.
00:41:03 So you want an instrumental,
rough vocal and then stems.
00:41:06 -Exactly, thank you.
-Right, I'll do that.
00:41:09 So, let's do our rough vocal patch
first and make sure these are on.
00:41:20 Yeah dude,
if I sit with this I'll definitely
have a better idea what to do.
00:41:32 I'm not gonna lie, that piano
part is pretty dope.
00:41:36 So, 'File',
'Export Audio/Video'
and then I want everything coming out
of the output of my master right now.
00:41:43 And we're just gonna leave PCM encode on,
which is gonna be wave file.
00:41:49 And then just hit 'Export'.
00:41:52 And I'm gonna call this
'JAredill Session 1',
with the capital A in 'JA'.
00:42:03 -Thank you.
-No, thank you.
00:42:06 Let me go to all the rough tracks
and just mute them, gray them out
and then do the same process.
00:42:11 Shortcut is gonna be Shift + Cmd + R?
Yeah. It's so second
nature to me I always forget.
00:42:17 I'm so used to Logic commands.
00:42:19 We don't mention Logic here
because it doesn't make sense.
00:42:22 Sorry, I'm part of the Logic club.
00:42:25 Alright. So here's the instrumental.
00:42:27 For the stems I'll give you the tempo,
we're at 84 bpm.
00:42:35 So, I'll just do, let's say...
00:42:38 These are the elements that I have here.
00:42:40 So now that I've selected these tracks
we've got Kontakt all the way to the drum,
just by holding shift.
00:42:46 So, I'm gonna go here, make sure
I have 'selected tracks only',
so the tracks that I selected
are the ones that I'm bouncing.
00:42:53 I'm gonna hit 'Export'.
00:42:55 I'm gonna create a new folder
so that the stems live in a folder
and I'll call this:
'Jaredsill Idea 84 BPM Cmajor'.
00:43:06 And there you go.
00:43:09 Cool, so we've got all
the stems printed for
you to just vibe with,
if you wanna mute a part out
or just bring it in, just to kind of
toy around with the arrangement
so you have a little bit of
liberty and freedom with that.
00:43:20 I gave you the instrumental
and the vocal so you
can use that as reference.
00:43:24 And yeah, I think it would be good
that we approach it with some new ears,
I would love to hear
what you do with this.
00:43:30 Yeah, we've got to come in fresh with it.
00:43:32 I'd love to hear the concept lyrically,
where you're gonna go with this.
00:43:35 So anxious to hear
where you head with this.
00:43:37 And then,
once you got something we'll come back,
I'll add finishing touches
to the production and
get it ready for mix.
00:43:44 Let's do this.
Let's bring that home.

Really coming together! Looking forward to the ideas to come and more insight into the moves made! Will have to revisit the VocalSynth2 on Midi to effect the vocals....Was he playing notes on that midi track to effect the vocals?

Great series. Ivan's talent is amazing, his creativity is insane and gives the impression that everything is so easy! I'm impressed by the workflow in Ableton. Thanks guys!
