Start to Finish: Vance Powell - Episode 5 - Guitar Overdubs Part 1

Pro Video

22min

(22)

Now that the band has laid down a solid foundation to build off of, Vance and Guitarist/Vocalist, Jeff Gorman, comb through the track punching in on parts to get an exciting main guitar take as well as double sections to add intensity.

Watch as Vance:

  • Works with Jeff to come up with exciting overdubbed layers
  • Edits the performances for feel (rather than perfection)
  • Uses creative editing and silence to increase the intensity of the intro
  • Consolidates multiple microphone tracks of the same guitar performance down to a stereo track to keep the session tidy
  • Phase aligns the bass DI and bass amp tracks
  • Dials in the Ampeg SVTR plugin on the sub guitar track to add dimension
  • Outlines the rest of the plan for recording the song

Vance Powell

Vance studied eletrical engineering in Misouri and started his carreer in live sound as a front-of-house engineer. In 2002, he moved to Nashville in order to become studio manager and chief engineer at the legendary Black Bird studios in Nashville. In 2006, he co-founded Sputnik studios along with Grammy winning engineer Mitch Dane, still in Nashville.

Vance Powell has won 6 Grammy awards working with rock artists such as The Raconteurs, Kings of Leon, Jack White, Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, The Dead Weather and more.

Powell's domain of expertise is definitely mixing and producing rock music. As shown in his pureMix videos, Vance likes to experiment and create new fuller and exciting sounds using all kinds of pedals, echos, analog outboards and plug-ins. Vance was used to recording to tape and definitely has an analog approach that makes him commit to fewer good sounding tracks rather than piling up takes in Pro Tools.

His goal is to make something new and warm that fits the band's vision with upfront snare drums and powerful guitars. Rocking.

How does that work when he commits the stereo guitar take onto one track? (The 4 audio tracks to 1 stereo track). I noticed he routed the audio tracks to the aux and then the out of the aux went to out 17-18 and commited that and made it into a stereo audio track.

I really like how crisp it sounds! I love the editing too, I found very interesting that aggressive cutting in the guitar parts, and I think that that's what the track needed.
