Poppy ‘Her’ - Trailer
w/ Darrell Thorp
Poppy ‘Her’
2 h 24 min • 2023
Darrell Thorp's relationship with one of rock's prized producers, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, began in 2000 when he and Justin, a part of Beck's band, were recording the record "Sea Change." Since then, the two have been involved in numerous successful records. When Justin finished producing Poppy's record, "Flux," he reached out to Darrell to take it across the finish line.
In this Puremix exclusive, Darrell reveals more of the techniques he has used to mix and engineer records for some of rock's most prominent artists, gaining him ten Grammy awards and over three Billion streams.
See how Darrell Thorp:
- Explains how he starts from where the artist left off with the rough mix instead of from scratch
- Goes through each of the drum mics to add excitement and dimension to the kit
- Explains his approach to placing drum room mics
- Adds his Distressor and Vulfcomp parallel chains and explains alternative options for each
- Goes through each of the bass guitar tracks to add size and attitude to the bass
- Explains what he is looking for with eq and volume balance of the guitars in the stereo image
- Discusses his approach to de-essing vocals
- Adds his parallel compression bus chain for vocals
- Adds Andrew Scheps spread processing to the lead vocals in place of the distortion plugin used in the rough mix
- Adds his stereo bus compressor to the mix and explains how he sets his attack and release settings by genre
- Shares the delay throw reverb chain he used on Beck’s Morning Phase
- Uses clip effects to automate EQ onto specific lines of the vocal to remove mud
- Explains how he delivers a loud version of the mix to his clients, using PSP Audio’s Vintage Warmer 2

Great to have Darrell sharing his wisdom with us! Only thing is.. I'de love some guidance on his use of the 1176 compressor... Darrell often says that he uses fast attack and slow release as his go to to settings and picked this up from Nigel Godrich. He demonstrates it 3 minutes in to part 2 of this video also. The only thing is as the settings are reversed on 1176 does he actually mean to say that he uses the settings slow attack and fast release?? Maybe he is just thinking on auto pilot based on other compressors? Am curious as its something I've heard him mention several times but has got me confused now

I love to see pros at work (in any kind of field in our professional life, everybody has talents if you want to use them and develop them by hard work & passion), his no nonsense approach and his knowledge was obvious and I,m grateful as a pro studiodrummer and mixer myself to get the chance to learn here... I wish everybody lots of learning fun on puremix here! Cheers, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex- EPICA.

you guys worry so much about making ads for audiences in other countries but don't provide subtitles for them

We are working on a new subtitle system; we apologize for the inconvenience and thank you so much for your feedback.

VERY EDUCATIONAL, thank you so much Darrell, your approach to this mix was very informative and coincidetally, very similar to my phylosophy. The only thing that I consider could have been better are the screams near the end, they were left a little harsh to my taste, a little too loud and maybe too dry for the atmosphere.

That melody is so Elliott Smith. Great tutorial!! So interesting to see different mixer's approaches to different things. I personally would have gone a lot more aggressive in general from the instrumental out, but I'm still learning how exactly I would do that, and this tutorial helped! Maybe I should download the stems and put my money where my mouth is, haha. But seriously, utmost respect to Darrell, and thank you so much.

Love this tutorial. Super informative.
Question, do the provided practice stems have all the producer's processing on them that we're seeing in the video? Or rather, in what ways do the stems vary from what Darrell is working on? Thanks

Very good explanation series and approach to this great song. Thanks for doing this. Ps. The 1:30 minute files seem not worth the time to work with. Thanks
